Visit to Boughton House, Northamptonshire 17th July 2013
On a glorious summer's day, a full coach of members visited the house and gardens known as 'The English Versailles.'
The house has been the home of the Montagus and their descendants since 1528 and has a staggering collection of
treasures from almost every field of the decorative arts.
After comprehensive guided house tours, we enjoyed a superb buffet lunch followed by free time to enjoy the stunning
gardens and waterscapes. Many parasols were in evidence on such a hot day! Tea was provided before our journey home.
Members appreciated the opportunity to stop and view the Eleanor Cross in the village of Geddington. It is the best-preserved
of three surviving crosses erected in 1294 by the grief-stricken Edward 1 to mark the places where his wife Eleanor's funeral
cortege rested overnight on its way south to London.
