Christmas at Waddesdon December 6th 2013
Luckily the weather was better than the freezing temperatures and high winds the day before. We arrived at 11.30 and we were free to visit the areas in our own time until 1.45 when we all could enter the house. During the walk through the grounds everyone saw the red kites cruising the skies.
The first stop for many was coffee outside, sat on chairs with sheepskins and rugs for warmth. Then on to see the stables with Santa's grotto and the gift shops for Christmas gifts.
The Christmas Market, further down the hill, has increased in size with displays of food and drinks from many areas of
the UK including Ireland, the Isle of Wight and Wales with numerous tasting opportunities. The Garden Centre had many
types of floral displays and pot plants including cyclamen and orchids.
The Austrian-theme house Christmas decorations in the East and Bachelor wings were varied and stunning; we were also able to take time looking at the art work and furniture and talking to the guides.
The Swarovski room was stunning - all white, perfect swan napkins, sparkling crystals and then the hanging installation of pieces of broken china.
The lunch was enjoyed by all; the end of our trip was a highlight for many of us as we walked the Winter Light Trail in the dark; all the Christmas Trees outside were covered in lights and then we followed a winding path turning corners and seeing first one of the 6 large scale art installations by British light artist Bruce Munro. These included flashing tepees, owls on perches, musical plastic bottles and a river of water winding down the hill - the lights changing colours to create waves.
Altogether a worthwhile local trip enjoying the company of friends and getting to know others.
