Visit to Buckingham Palace 7th September 2017
September 7th was a glorious, sunny day from beginning to end. 77 HEDFAS members and friends travelled to London to visit the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace and see an exhibition of some of the clothes and hats worn by the Queen from her childhood to the present day. Many remarked that mannequins did not always do the outfits justice but there was no mistaking their quality, particularly of the embroidery, beading and sequin designs which were exquisite.
We saw the dresses worn by the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret at their parents’ Coronation; the wedding dress worn by Princess Elizabeth; a copy of the christening gown most recently worn by Princess Charlotte ( the original is now too delicate to be displayed); the Coronation robe with the embroidered and beaded emblems of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales incorporated into the design; the outfit worn by her Majesty at the Investiture of the Prince of Wales; an elegant, long, black, lace dress worn at her meeting with Pope John Paul; suits and dresses worn on State occasions and on trips abroad.
We wandered through the State Apartments ending in the Throne Room where over the years many investitures have taken place. Many of the party had lunch in the terrace café and some were seen enjoying an ice cream cornet in the Palace gardens.
There may have been a few tired feet but everyone seemed to have enjoyed the day.
